'So many people being scammed, defrauded, extorted, sextorted and even physically harmed by people they've met online (on social media, dating apps, even gaming chatrooms). Victims are getting younger and younger.
Teach your children to be cynical. PRESUME EVERYONE YOU MEET ONLINE IS DODGY UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE. Video call the person to confirm they are who the say they are. Do a reverse google image search of their profile picture. Know that people steal your friends' names and pictures to create fake accounts on new platforms.
Do not share personal information with people you meet online. If someone asks you for money, stop talking to them immediately. DO NOT SEND NUDES TO PEOPLE YOU MEET ONLINE (the sextortion ring in SA is making a fortune). If you have been a victim, have a look at the sextortion blog on my website.
If you do meet up with someone you've met online, make sure you meet in a public place. Share your live location with someone you trust. Life360 is great for tracking loved ones.
Please stay safe out there. These stories are breaking my heart.' shared Emma Sadleir.
