Clyde and Rose Wyatt, of Andrew Street in Howick, discovered this week that some precious items were missing from the garage. Apart from some tools and garden implements, most upsetting were some model cars from a collection built up over many years by Clyde. In particular there was a set of six miniature Rovers, depicting various models of the Rover marque, which were not easy to come by. They were displayed in a small glass case, but the case is now empty.

Well done to all our members, experienced and novice, who played in the Lambert /Lambert Brothers (Men) and Sanders (Ladies) Inter-club competitions this past weekend. We all did our best and will carry our experiences forward into next year’s competition. The men who went into the Lambert Brothers Trophy did us proud. Congratulations to Colin Burden who won all his singles matches and to the others who fought hard.

Well done to the ladies who beat Hilton in the first match and went on to play the extremely strong side from Howick who went into the finals. Well done to Howick and to the eventual winners, the ladies from Maritzburg West Bowling Club.

1. Celebrate a cracker- free Diwali.
Diwali is the festival of lights not noise.

2.Keep them indoors
It might be best to keep your pets indoors during the celebrations. It will put your pets at ease, and reduce the risk of them running away. Please get your pets Microchipped!

3. Keep the windows, doors, and curtains closed
Keeping everything closed will muffle noise and keep your pets from seeing flashing lights that might scare them further. Avoid setting any fireworks off close to the house.

4. Background noise
This will not only help to muffle the bangs and booms going on outside, but a constant source of noise might also calm your pets.

5. If your pets hide, let them
If your pets get scared enough to hide under a table, or beneath a bed, don't attempt to pull them out. This might stress your pet further.

6.Comfort them
Being with them and comforting them will help your pet feel calm and safe.

7. Get a blanket
Sometimes a cover, such as a blanket, will help calm your pets down. It can help him feel more comfortable and protected.

8. Give them a treat
Giving your pets a treat or their favorite toy can distract them from the noises.

9. Stay calm
Be sure to stay calm when you're around your pets. Your pets will naturally react to your behavior, so acting panicky or excited around the dog will only make matters worse.

Just what the doctor ordered: some feel-good tunes at this time of year! We've had a chat to the good people at Village in Yard41, Howick and they are gung-ho - so we are going to make this awesome restaurant into a theatre for two nights!

Erin Fourie and I debuted Feelin' Good at the beginning of 2020, and it was such a great run in the theatre that we've been looking for an opportunity to put it on again. This show promises lots of laughs, nostalgia and good vibes and is suitable for young and old.

Tickets are R220 per person, which includes the show and a two-course meal. The meal includes a main course (choice between Loin Ribs, 1/4 Chicken, Rump or Veg bake) and dessert (choice between Chocolate tart/Brownies, chocolate mousse & Ice Cream or Pear & Ginger Pana cotta).

On Friday 29 October, the monthly 2 Bowls Trips Competition sponsored by Woodstone Craft Café was held. Fortunately, the rain held off so players all managed to stay dry.
The winners of the competition were Werner Strydom, Gerry and Rian Janse van Rensburg. The runners up were Robbie Rajah, Ray Ramdeen and Vis Padayachee.
The winners of the Plate event were Ed Sharpe, Koos Marais and Neill Birdsey.

Traditionally job descriptions are a list of tasks, a document that gets filed in file thirteen never to be looked at again. Job profiles are a far more useful tool allowing you to manage your staff effectively as well allowing you to integrate this into your wider HR strategy.

A job profile is a comprehensive document that not only covers that role, but the competencies which are behaviours and skills and experience needed for the role. A job profile is a holistic view on the role as well as the type of person that should fill the role.

You may be asking – So what’s the value in that? Role profiles can be used for the following reasons:

Performance Management:
Job profiles are outcomes-based and each key performance area is clearly defined. With the outcomes clear it is easy to quantify tasks into deliverables which can be measured and used for performance management systems.

When dealing with an employee that is incapable of performing his/her duties to the required standard and you need to follow a more serious route which could lead to dismissal, this will require you to have proof that the employee knew what was expected of them. A job profile eliminates any form of confusion – ensure that your newly appointed employee has a job description that has been signed and explained you may need this in future.

Recruitment and Succession Planning:
A job profile assists with recruitment as succession planning. The profile indicates both the technical, behavioural competencies and skill sets required for the position. This allows for easy drafting of recruitment adverts and the ability to match the role to psychometric competencies. Job profiles are an important tool in succession planning as this reminds the employer not merely to appoint a person based on the tasks at hand but to also incorporates looking at the person according to job fit. Many mistakes are made when taking an excellent worker and promoting them to a supervisory or management role the wheels fall off because they do not have the necessary behavioural competencies to lead, manage or discipline a team.

Training and Employee Development Plan:
The job profile is an excellent tool to identify an employee’s gaps between where they are and where they should be in terms of the role, training and develop plans can be drafted from identified needs these should feed into your skills development plan and annual Workplace Skills plans submitted to your relevant SETA.

Workforce Planning:
Job profiles are key in determining role definitions and responsibilities within your organisation. When planning a restructure one would clearly need to define amalgamated or new roles. Using a job profile from the onset will clearly indicate which behavioural competencies and skills will be required for the new roles and the employer can easily assess whether an employee would fit into the new role. It’s not just a case of putting an extra person in an empty box, this could easily end in disaster with the employee unable to perform in the new role and a frustrated and unhappy employer.

The UCSI continues to quietly, but effectively, play a significant role in our community fight against crime. The support offered to Security companies, SAPS and Law Enforcement is critical in monitoring who is moving in and out of our areas. the UCSI has been able to assist SAPS and the community with valuable support and information.

UCSI Operational Stories
8 Sep: I found that specific vehicle, suspected of poaching in the area was not using the road out of Howick towards Tweedie. It was suspected that he/she was using a dirt road to avoid the camera or possible to use drive by opportunity to steal livestock between railroad and Stockowners property. A request was put through to the local farmer to lock his gate at night, This was done and ever since, this vehicle has been seen using the main road. Prevention is certainly better than cure.

10 Sep: In Hilton SACan requested a check on cameras for a suspect camera that was impersonating a "Sheriff of court". After a couple of hours searching cameras I found what could have been the suspected vehicle. Problem; complainant did not want to open SAP docket. Now I can not use the information I have gathered and all that time wasted.
Even an incident report will give us power to stop the next infringement. No report means no action.

15 Sep: Assisted Eskom with in camera hits for a theft out of warehouse. We had only times and general descriptions to work with. We identified some possible suspect vehicles which were followed up on by investigating office. A vehicle fitting one description was found in Mpophomeni.

16 Sep: This was a disaster day for UCSI. Two vehicles stolen in Hilton and UCSI was "blind". For the simplest reason; the gantry had run out of data to transmit. We have made a plan for this gantry; ANEW Hotel in Hilton are sponsoring WiFi signal to the camera so we will have minimal down time going forward.

19 Sep: Magma spotted a suspect poaching vehicle in Karkloof area. Unfortunately an entry mistake by myself meant I did not see vehicle on the camera system. This mistake has been identified and assisted in rectifying other loaded vehicles been missed too.
Mistakes are made, your reaction to the mistake is important.

26 Sep: A suspected poaching vehicle reported in Karkloof area. Vehicle movement was checked and enough evidence found to load vehicle onto snipr for further observation.
No incident is too small to follow up on.

1 Oct: Suspect poaching vehicle alerted on Hilton cameras. Karkloof security informed, but vehicle did not enter area.
We are always watching.

6 Oct: A suspected stolen vehicle was seen in the Hilton CBD. Hilton rapid response personnel reacted and followed. Vehicle became aware and decided to leave the area.
Prevention is mostly better than cure.

11 Oct: I received a message from Karkloof security member about an abandoned vehicle in Otters Bluff area. A brief search showed some erratic travels but nothing to be alarmed about. However an unrelated contact from Midland Tracker member; They are looking for a hijacked vehicle which fit the description of vehicle in Otters Bluff. I gave information to PMB response group so they could react. Following information sent to me I was able to guide reaction force to the vehicle itself. SAP and Tracker took over case and UCSI stood down.
Sharing information results in positive outcome for every one.

18 Oct: In the early hours a suspect poaching vehicle was flagged coming into Hilton from Sweetwaters area. We kept sight of it all the way into Howick. Magma caught up to vehicle as it was filling fuel. We think the driver spotted the security vehicle and decided to leave Howick towards Merrivale were he lost us. This was a long journey to just fill up with fuel.
Prevention is better than cure.

21 Oct: SACan notified of a suspected vehicle involved in Cell tower battery theft. Vehicle loaded to Snipr system and followed all the way to Bulwer area where various security companys and SAP stopped and searched vehicle. No unlawful goods found so SAP had to release. However, one person in vehicle was recognized later as a wanted suspect but only after release. Later in afternoon vehicle was spotted by camera in Bulwer returning to Howick area. Security companies and SAP waited near N3 on ramps where vehicle was stopped and suspect arrested. In this incident, 7 security companies and 3 SAP stations were involved in apprehending a wanted criminal.
Sharing information and working as a team always wins.

30 Oct: 10h20 (this time is important). A vehicle was reported as hi-jacked on Hilton security group. UCSI spotted that the vehicle was traveling towards Hilton from Merrivale. KSS loaded to Snipr system so we could follow it. Hit at Rotunda, hit at Crompton road. Magma Hilton stopped vehicle at 10h38 (18 minutes from report to stopped). SAP arrested suspects. The owner of vehicle was still filling out paperwork at police station when his bakkie was returned. This has got to be a record for fastest recovery?
Ability to respond in time will catch someone.

The UCSI welcomes Sompisi Protection Services from Mpophomeni, who have joined Knight Security Solutions (KSS) and Ballid Security as subscribing security companies to the UCSI.

How can you get involved?
The UCSI will not be sustainable without monthly community support from business entities, shopping centres, hospitals, schools, estates, security companies and private individuals. Please join the UCSI as a contributing member. There are still some critical gantries that need to be erected – primarily in the Merrivale and Mpophomeni areas. There are also two “holes” to close in the Hilton area.

Annelee was with the team for 244 matches, in which time she worked with seven national coaches, 248 players and 21 Springbok captains. The book is her celebration of a 21-year journey as the First Lady of Springbok rugby.

During her time, she has been part of a Springbok team which lifted the Rugby World Cup trophy in 2007 and 2019, the British and Irish Lions series in 2009, The Mandela Challenge Trophy, as well as Tri-Nations and Castle Lager Rugby Championship winning campaigns.

Her role has seen her worked with legendary Springboks such as Os du Randt, Percy Montgomery, John Smit, Bryan Habana, Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Beast Mtawarira and more recently Siya Kolisi, Duane Vermeulen, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Cheslin Kolbe.

Apart from all the rugby honours, she was also awarded the prestigious Hollard Sports Personality of the year 2019.

The European Film Festival has just successfully completed 10 days of online screenings and topical discussions, as well as community events and schools programmes. (14-24 October).

The principal purpose of the festival is to showcase new thought-provoking films from Europe, many of which may not be seen on SA cinema circuit or the respective streaming platforms. The increased participation of countries from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia added diversity to this year’s offerings, with stories providing glimpses into the experiences of citizens in their respective social worlds and cultures.

Public response has been excellent with 9,456 streams recorded - pretty good for a line-up of only 18 films! Attendance is well over 10,000 when the special event screenings, community and schools screenings are included.

Discussion programme still available online

While the films are now closed recordings of the festival’s Live Zoom discussion programme and Q&As with the filmmakers remain available on www.eurofilmfest.co.za as an opportunity to engage more deeply with some of the topics raised in the films showing in the festival.

With 13 of the 18 festival films having women directors the series kickstarted with Breaking Glass Ceilings for Women in Film, a crucial and necessary focus on how far we have come, and not come, in honoring, empowering women filmmakers. This features veteran Polish director Agnieszka Holland and the highly experienced Dutch writer/ director Antoinette Beumer in conversation with SWIFT chairperson Zanele Mthembu, and Bongiwe Selane whose new sequel Happiness Forever launches on Netflix in November. This conversation provided insightful perspectives on the situation in the local and international film industries where clearly much still needs to be accomplished.

If you watched Mr Bachmann and His Class you have witnessed Mr Bachmann’s unconventional but absolutely inspiring approach to teaching. The enigmatic educationist participates in a delightful session In Conversation with Mr Bachmann, with inputs from former MEC for Education Mary Metcalfe and Andisiwe Hlungwane of Teachers CAN, with moderation by DUT academic Dr Rene Smith. Make sure you stay to the end, as any good student should….

Aligning perfectly with this year’s festival theme of Healing Journeys the session The Bright Side – Surviving the Journey delves into the sensitive territory of cancer, but is equally applicable to other journeys of acceptance, healing and recovery. A powerful and heartfelt discussion between three- time cancer survivor Anthea Lewis and film director Ruth Meehan, carefully moderated by Rosie Motene, takes us deep into the experiences, and offers pragmatic approaches to coming to terms with major life-challenges.

In A Film about Life, Death and Money, Daily Maverick Citizen editor and health activist Mark Heywood together with Jan Verheyen and Lien Willaert, directors of the film Save Sandra, puts the thorny issue of access to medicine under the spotlight. As Heywood points out, the title could well be A Film about Life, Death, LOVE and Money, as love for their daughter is the driving force behind the family’s painful battle with pharmaceutical companies.

After dealing with these weighty subjects a fitting closure to the discussion programme comes in the form of Humour, Healing and Messaging where popular SA comedian Riaad Moosa engages Michael Kreihsl, Uje Brandelius and Michela Andreozzi about their films and their approach to humour. This lively discussion makes a compelling case that Laughter can indeed be the best medicine, and that humour is definitely part of the healing journey, for individuals, and for society.

The photo below shows part of the meal offered to players who took part in The Last Man Standing fun comp organized by Kevin Palmer; Surf ‘n Turf for supper on Saturday. Thanks to our resident ‘chefs’ for this delectable feast.

RESULTS:
The J Leslie Smith/Alan Sara Comp was won by Mike Cain and Pat Norris. The second prize went to Colin Norris and Melanie Ross. The Plate Event was won by Colin Burden and Shayne Knott. Well done to all the winners and thank you to our sponsors.

What a fantastic, exciting afternoon we had on Saturday with a lot of laughter and good company. Bowlers and Hillbillies were on the greens for Last Man Standing which was won by Lisa Nagel. There was also a really great turnout for our surf and turf meal which was also accompanied by laughter and great company!! It was also most encouraging to welcome a few visitors from other clubs and yet another prospective new member who has recently relocated to our town from Dundee. The Hillbillies are a group of energetic, hard-working younger members and prospective bowlers who have lowered the average age of membership while raising the level of fun and enjoyment.
