The second round of the NIBA League was played on Saturday. The Umgeni Waterfall ladies played at Hilton where they won on both rinks. Both men's teams had home games. The second league team played and beat Collegians; the third league team played Howick and were defeated by them.

On Sunday one men's team skipped by Colin Burden and one ladies' team skipped by Bernice Burden played in the NIBA Open Trips semi-finals at Maritzburg Bowling Club. Both teams put up a good fight but lost their games to the Maritzburg team skipped by Kevin Williams and the West team skipped by Marinda Opperman. We wish our respective opponents 'Good Bowling' in the finals next week.

Regular start of play is as follows: Social bowls: Tuesday at 09h00; Fridays at 2.30 (dress is casual); Wednesday and Saturday at 13h30 (whites). Tabs must be in 15 minutes prior to commencement of play.

John Withers is offering skills training on a Friday for those who wish to participate. Those wishing to play social bowls on a Friday afternoon are encouraged to do so.

Over a hot weekend the members of Umgeni Waterfall Bowling Club participated in social bowls at the club, various league matches and also in the NIBA trips competition.

On Saturday, in the first round of the Ladies' League played at Creighton Bowling Club, the ladies had a good game but lost to Drakensberg South. The men's team playing in the Second League lost to Richmond. The men playing in the first league against Hilton won their match.

On Sunday 04 October, one men's and one ladies' team took part in the early rounds of the NIBA trips competition. There was some stiff competition but our members acquitted themselves well. Both the men's team and the ladies' team won all their games. The ladies go on to play in the semi-finals next Sunday afternoon while the men play in the quarter finals on Sunday morning. Congratulations to both teams for their achievements. We wish Colin Burden, Piet van Rensburg and Clark Logan GOOD BOWLING in the quarter finals. The ladies consisting of Bernice Burden, Rita Aitken and Alison Toms who go on to meet a team from Maritzburg West led by Marinda Opperman are also wished GOOD BOWLING.

Howick High School's Annual Prize-Giving Ceremony and Speech Night takes place on the evening of Friday, 16th October and the Guest of Honour this year is past pupil, Avril Halstead. Avril was the Dux of 1993, was one of the top 10 matriculants in KZN and was the first Howick High School Gold Badge Recipient. She was the 1500m South African Champion in 1999 and represented the country in athletics and cross-country. Nominated as a young Global Leader, Avril was one of the Mail and Guardian's Top 200 Young South Africans in 2011 and is currently a Chief Director at the National Treasury of South Africa.

John Geekie established the garden on Benvie Farm in 1882. It is a historic 70 acre garden situated in the Karkloof mistbelt. John and Jenny Robinson are the custodians of Benvie on behalf of the Geekie family. Benvie Garden is now open daily until Sunday 11th October from 9.00am – 4.00pm.

John and Jenny welcome you to bring a picnic basket, family and friends. The entry fee is R50.00 for adults and children are free. For pensioners a reduced entry fee of R30.00 will apply on all Thursday's over the open garden period.

Carol and Kevin Sacke invite you to visit the Kelli Belli Memorial Garden on 24 and 25 October 2015. This is a garden dedicated to my little girl, Kelli Sacke, who died from a brain tumour in 2010. There is a heart garden, formal garden and a special river with a tiny bridge. The colour is the most special part of gardening this garden. Gardening heals my soul and makes me happy.

There will be a tea garden.

As part of the Howick Prep Grade 6 'Caring for Others' theme, the Grade 6 pupils decided to collect items of use for Angel's Care. They collected clothes, linen, books, toys, food and toiletries. There was much delight amongst the children at Angel's Care when a school bus and bakkie load of donated goods were delivered. The staff at Angel's Care, are doing amazing work with these children on a daily basis and our community can be proud to have such caring and dedicated people who work tirelessly and with a good heart. Howick High School celebrated their matric pupils at their farewell dinner on Thursday, 1 October. The theme of the event was 'Phantom of the Opera' with very dramatic red, white and black décor. After making their grand arrivals, the pupils enjoyed a cocktail party with their parents before they entered the hall, where they were served a 3-course meal and received their gift of a monogrammed cushion. Following entertainment by the Grade 11 Dance Committee, they danced the night away and captured many memories which they will take with them into the next Act of their life's journey.

To celebrate 2015 as the Environmental Year of the Soil, Howick Prep School Art Club has created a sculpture which represents the soil as the heart of nature and all creatures that live in or above the soil using it for food, burrowing or hibernation.

Soil is a vital part of the natural environment. It provides a habitat for a wide range of organisms and the everyday things we use such as food, clothes, furniture etc. All animals living on the land need soil and plants to survive. Without healthy soil we can't grow the food that we need.

With the improvement in the weather, it is good to see an increase of members on the greens and also to welcome past members and social members who come to watch and to join us for tea.

On Wednesday of this past week the tabs in competition sponsored by J Leslie Smith & Co Inc and The Health Nut was played. It gave us great pleasure to have Lisa Nagel of J Leslie Smith join us on the green. Well done, Lisa! We enjoyed having you play alongside us. Crystal Dellar of J Leslie Smith joined us later to present the prizes to the winners, Tony Gage. Balf Balfour, Graham Sharp and Barry Fairbrother, and to the runners up, Ian Andrews, Julia Strachan and Pat Ciro.

On Saturday, after a short game of bowls, the club's AGM was held. The following were elected to the committee: Bernice Burden (President), Peter Burton (Vice-President), Bernice Meyer (Treasurer), Graeme Cameron (Secretary) Colin Burden (Competition Secretary), Tim Waring (Assistant Competition Secretary). Alan Wells (Refreshment Manager), Piet van Rensburg (Green Keeper), Rita Aitken and Denise Rocher (Catering Co-ordinators).

In addition the following were elected to be selectors: Barbara Brook, Margie Holl, Barry Bedworth, Ray Bester and John Withers.

On Saturday evening Colin and Bernice Burden attended the NIBA Dinner and Prize-giving where Colin accepted the Lambert Brothers Trophy on behalf of the men who played in the teams during the 2015 season. This is the second year running that the Trophy has come to Umgeni Waterfall Bowling Club. During the Prize Giving ceremony the NIBA Squads for Inter-District and Inter-Provincial teams for 2016 were announced. Colin and Bernice were selected to skip the Men's and Ladies' President Teams which will play in the Inter-District Quadrangular to be held in Margate.

The Mad Hatters Party was the brainchild of an employee who provides Diversional Therapy to residents of the Frail Care facility at Amberfield. Some cottage residents were approached and asked to each host a table, to decorate their tables to match the theme and to invite guests to join them. The idea of holding such a tea and of hosting a table was met with great enthusiasm. Cakes were baked, hats were made, tables were set out and decorated, and great fun was had by everyone who attended. Attendees also enjoyed a fashion show with models being drawn from frail care staff, carers and office management. These models strutted their stuff to the accompaniment of music provided by Martin Adams. The event was sponsored by J Leslie Smith & Co Inc, a firm of community minded attorneys with offices in Howick.

Care after sexual assualt:

• Get to a safe place.
• You can get help by going to Angel's Care Crisis Centre.
• Tell someone you trust and ask them to go with you to get help.
• Remember not to take a bath or shower, and not to go to the toilet if possible.
• Do not change your clothes unless you really have to. Use paper to cover your clothes not plastic.
• In order to get a PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) to prevent you contracting HIV you must be seen at Angels' Care Crisis Centre within 72 hours.
• Remember there is also treatment available to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections as a result of sexual assault.
• It is always important to seek help if you have been sexually assaulted, no matter how long after the event.

It is with great regret that the uMngeni SPCA is forced to postpone our annual Township Dog Show (which was planned for October) due to circumstances beyond our control.

The uMngeni SPCA / Hill's event is oldest, and possibly the largest, 'township' dog show in South Africa. It is an integral part of the uMngeni SPCA's community outreach and intends to reach as many dogs as possible in areas where owners are unable to access an animal clinic. Before entering the show ring each entrant attends a free clinic to be vaccinated, dewormed, dipped and have a general check-up. They also receive a bag of Hill's pet food, a blanket, a bowl, collar and lead. Entrance to the event is free of charge.

The next uMngeni SPCA / Hill's Township Dog Show will be in April 2016. The venue and date will be confirmed before the end of the year. Hill's remains the main sponsor.

At the annual Howick High School Matric Art Exhibition on Tuesday, 8 September, in excess of 20 art pieces were selected by representatives of the Tatham Art Gallery to be on show at their 2016 Matric Exhibition. A total of R7 000 was raised via a silent auction with a painting by Ann Raw fetching the highest bid of R1150 and a further R2 600 was raised through the auction of two 'Dlamini' statuettes to benefit the squash court building fund. The school Photography Club displayed their work in a section called the 'Pixabition' and a number of these pictures were purchased on the evening. We wish our art students all the best with their final art paper and practical examinations.
