Thank you to Greendale Spar and Amber Glades for their sponsorship of our monthly drawn pairs competition on Saturday. We had a nice turnout for a lovely afternoon of bowls in the sunshine and congratulate Colin Brown and Barry Fairbrother on their win with a whopping +19 shot difference. Well done also to Koos Marais and Bruce Tucker who took second place with a +7 shot difference.

Pigeon season is almost here and we must say a big thank you to the Duzi Racing Pigeon Club who are busy with upgrades to our entertainment veranda. They’ve generously installed a new roof, and will be having canvas blinds fitted soon to keep us cosy through the winter. This is in preparation for their racing season, and we’re very excited to be hosting their club members for the first time at the end of the month. On Thursday, the 30th of May we will have our first flock arrive for scanning and crating before they leave for their first race the following day. Activities kick off from 5.30pm and anyone is welcome to join us to see what it’s all about. It promises to be a very interesting experience! Another activity that you can enjoy at UWBC is snooker and we’re on the lookout for our own Ronnie O’Sullivan! If you’d like to try your hand at the game, or participate in the Snooker Ladder, please contact Joe on 071 992 1150. The draw for a starting position on the ladder will take place on the 22nd of May so be sure to get your name in asap. Rules of the ladder are on the notice board in our snooker room.

On Wednesday’s the uMgeni Darts Association have been busy with their social and league darts and with 8 permanent dart boards up in the clubhouse they’ve grown steadily. Anyone wanting more information can contact Bundy on 079 625 3970.

Reporting crimes to your local SAPS
Please report any crime, no matter how small, to your local SAPS and Security Service Provider. If you have items stolen it is important that you open a case and get a CAS number. Reporting crime to the South African Police Services is very important.

The SAPS will open a case docket and investigate the crime, effecting arrests of suspects and presenting the case to courts for prosecution.

The Process:
• When a person has been a victim of crime, they can contact the police by dialing 10111 or visit their nearest Police Station. If a Police Official attends the crime scene, they will obtain a statement from the complainant and witnesses if possible.
• The Police Official will then go to the Police Station and register the case in the SAPS Crime Administration System (CAS) and give the complainant the reference which is called a CAS number.
• The complainant must ensure that he/she retains this CAS number as a reference for future enquiries regarding the criminal case.
• If the complainant visits the local Police Station to report the crime, they will be attended to in the Community Service Centre by a Police Official. The Police Official will first interview and then take a statement from the complainant and register the reported crime into the CAS file.
• The complainant will then be given a CAS number which must be used for all enquiries regarding the reported criminal case.
• The completed case docket is then allocated to a Police Detective who will carry out the investigation and all enquiries can then be directed to this detective.
• The Detective in charge of the particular case will complete the investigation and present the docket to the relevant court for prosecution.
• The complainant will be notified by the Detective when he/she is to attend the court hearings.

This self-proclaimed 'nature freak' misses the KZN Midlands people who remain in her heart, and looks forward to attending ART in the Country for the third year running. 

"Art in the Country is a wonderful event, and I am excited to exhibit again this year." said Denise.

Visitors to this prestigious art exhibition at Harrington House in Hilton KZN, could be blessed to see her first rendition of a Drakensberg mountain landscape. Denise paints in acrylic paints and covers wildlife, birds, seascapes and landscapes.

Drakondale High School pupil, Tristen White, is celebrating his 16th birthday in a unique and selfless way - by taking the plunge to raise funds for rhino conservation. At the end of May, his birthday weekend, Tristen will be participating in the Skydive for Rhinos in Hluhluwe, an exhilarating experience that will help make a difference in the lives of these majestic creatures.

Tristen's decision to give back for his birthday is a response to the devastating rhino poaching crisis, which leaves countless rhinos brutally slaughtered and abandoned, and a staggering number of baby rhinos orphaned and vulnerable. By supporting rhino conservation, Tristen hopes to contribute to the protection of these incredible animals and the ecosystems they inhabit.

"I wanted to do something meaningful for my birthday, and I couldn't think of a better way to make a difference than by supporting rhino conservation," said Tristen White. "I hope my skydive will inspire others to join me in this important cause."

Durban SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge

Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium: Sunday 23 June

Entries are open for the 34th running of the Durban SPAR Women’s 10/5km Challenge that takes place in and around the Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium on Sunday 23 June.

The success of South Africa’s Most Beautiful Road Race strides ahead, with entries for 2024 capped at 12000. The uplifting theme for this year’s race is #ChooseYou with the underlying message of motivating oneself, encouraging women to prioritize self-care, both for their mental and physical well-being.

"Our theme “Choose You” amplifies our commitment to inspire a healthier community,” says Menelisi Luthuli, Marketing Executive, SPAR KZN. “In a world where external pressures often overshadow personal well-being, we encourage women to embark on a journey of self-care and self-discovery. SPAR advocates a balanced lifestyle where individuals prioritize their own needs alongside external demands, finding fulfillment in both. Ultimately, our theme this year emphasizes that self-care isn't selfish but rather crucial for lasting well-being and happiness.”

Two phenomenal strong local women are the 2024 Race Ambassadors. Inspiring youth wherever she goes, sporting star and role model Precious Mthembu is the current Baby Proteas Coach, she is an educator at Danville Park Girls’ High School and was a Protea Netball player, notching up 97 caps for South Africa. Joining her is Dr Marise Subrayan, an award-winning Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist based at Durban’s St Augustine’s Hospital, who is passionate about educating and empowering women and girls about female-related health.

The Challenge route remains unchanged from the 2023 event, with the fast and flat ‘out-and-back’ course starting under the shadow of the Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium, on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue and finishing on the outer fields of this iconic Durban landmark. The 10km race begins at 8am and the 5km race at 9am.

Entries for the 2024 edition of the Durban event are online at www.sparwomensrace.co.za/durban. Online entries close at midnight on 16 June. The online entry for the 10km run is R180, with a KZN Athletics licence, or R230 with a temporary licence, and for the 5km is R180. Entries at race registration are R200 (with licence) and R250 (without licence) for the 10km and R200 for the 5km. Bulk entry collections are also available.

At this Durban Challenge, a field of highly competitive runners will compete in the national SPAR Grand Prix Series that travels around South Africa. The total Series Prize Purse is sitting at over R1,68 million this year.

Prize money for the first female athlete crossing the line in Durban is R33,000 with the runner-up earning R25,000 and third place winning R20,000. The first South African woman across the line will also earn R10,000. There are also prizes for top age category runners.

A variety of lucky draw prizes will be awarded at prize giving, including a chance to win a car. All participants (18 plus and T&C’s apply) can enter the lucky draw where one race number will advance to the main draw for a Proton X50 valued at R449,000. Seven ladies from the seven races around the country must attend the glitzy SPAR Grand Prix prize-giving to qualify to win this car.

From early morning training sessions to late-night matches under the floodlights, the stadium pulses with the energy and enthusiasm of the youth on the cusp of greatness.

Through structured coaching, mentorship programs, and academic support initiatives, the stadium nurtures not only the bodies but also the minds and spirits of its young participants.

For Dumisane Dhlomo (21), a talented soccer player with dreams of turning pro, the stadium is a sanctuary — a place where he can escape the hardships of daily life and focus on his passion. "Sports saved me," he says with a grin. "It gave me something to believe in and took me out of a dark place filled with bad influences,” he added.

But it's not just about individual achievement; it's about community engagement and social cohesion. Through inter-school competitions, community tournaments, and outreach programs, sports in Mpophomeni fosters a sense of belonging and unity, transcending barriers of race, class, and background.

For Nokuthula Nzimande (16), a young netball player with aspirations of representing her country one day, the stadium is a symbol of possibility — a reminder that no dream is too big, and no obstacle too daunting. "Sports taught me that anything is possible as long as you’re willing to work hard for it," she says, her eyes sparkling with determination. “I have also made a lot of friends that have eventually become family," Nzimande added.

Indeed, the benefits of sports in Mpophomeni extend far beyond the playing field. They instill values such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance, preparing youth for the challenges of adulthood and the responsibilities of citizenship. They provide a platform for personal growth and self-discovery, empowering young people to realise their full potential and become leaders in their own right.

But perhaps most importantly, sports in Mpophomeni offers hope — a glimmer of possibility in a world too often defined by limitations and constraints. They remind us that no matter where we come from or what obstacles we face, we all have the power to shape our own destinies and build a better tomorrow.

The Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal presents the 4th annual Artfluence Human Rights Festival, a weeklong exploration of the power of art as a defender of social justice and human rights. Under the theme "Bridges of Solidarity," the 2024 festival takes place from 3 to 8 May 2024 and fosters collaboration among 40 cultural producers who will develop strategies that advance shared values.

The festival’s performance line-up boasts six not-to-miss events. During opening night, audiences can expect to be captivated by renowned arts policy specialist and political playwright, Mike van Graan’s acclaimed solo production, My Fellow South Africans, which is a satirical take on contemporary South Africa performed by Kim Blanche. For film enthusiasts, the festival will screen a documentary from Enver Samuels’s acclaimed documentary series, Truth Be Told on the TRC, titled Ntombikayise Kubheka, Bones of Memory.

Choreographed by Ukrainian Choreographer Kateryna Aloshyna and performed by South African dancers, We Stand for Freedom reflects on what the fight for freedom means for Ukrainians and South Africans. The performance involves the audience in interactive participation via digital medium. Based on the responses received, the dancers adapt the performance on stage.

Shakespeare to Gaza is a form of protest theatre drawing on the motif of liberation and resistance. This is a decolonial, Pan African response by South African activist artists to the unfolding genocide, weaving together key historical moments reflected in Shakespearean text and extracts of the Gaza Monologues, while harnessing our intertwined spirit of liberation resistance against injustice in solidarity with Palestine.

Durban-based choreographer, dancer and community activist, Musa Hlatshwayo, will introduce his interactive and performative installation Rubbish Orchestra to festival audiences. In this installation movement and sound integrate into a creative orchestral jam.

The festival’s culminates in a free of charge closing event at KZNSA Gallery curated by Dr Michelle Stewart of the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Digital Arts Unit. This event will feature large scale digital projections showcasing animation, experimental film, and digital imagery by Digital Arts post graduate students. This programme will also include interactive multimedia performances, an exhibition, and a collaborative 30-meter artwork, accompanied by performances by students from the Centre for Jazz & Contemporary Music. This project is presented in association with the Royal Academy of Art in Antwerp.

Expanding its reach, the Artfluence Human Rights Festival partners with the African Festival Network to welcome delegates from Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Mali and the DRC. Additionally, Nike Jonah a representative from the Pan African Creative Exchange will join the festival. Supported by the Flemish Representation of Flanders in South Africa, the festival will also host Philip Meersman, founder member and President of the World Poetry Slam Competition. The KZN Chapter of the South African Human Rights Commission has also pledged its support. Mike van Graan, will curate a series of roundtables and discussions for the festival. The programme will also include site visits to the KwaMuhle Museum, Luthuli Museum, and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. An evening programme will feature performances, exhibitions and film screenings.

The Artfluence Human Rights Festival unfolds from 3- 8 May 2024. The main event venue for the 4th annual Artfluence Human Rights Festival is Howard College Theatre at UKZN while the closing event will take place at KZNSA Gallery. Which was just the case for our monthly Dormehl Phalane 2 Bowl Trips played on Friday, the 26th of April when several teams braved the wet miserable weather to compete. Before saying well done to our winning teams, we must say a big congratulations to Pippa Griffin and her Dormehl team who were recently awarded the Franchise of the Year award at the Dormehl Phalane Property Group South Africa National Awards ceremony. We can’t think a more deserving or dedicated team and are so proud of our sponsor!

Grade 11 student receives soccer training at AFC Bournemouth in the UK

Paul Gumede, a Grade 11 student at Treverton College in the Midlands, enjoyed a weeks worth of training at AFC Bournemouth in the UK over the April holidays. Paul received training from accredited coaches as well as got a great taste of the UK Culture. We look forward to watching Paul this soccer season as he unpacks the skills he’s learnt this past holiday. (Top image.)

A huge congratulations to Sarah Sykes, a grade 7 student who is swimming in the Swimming South Africa Regional Level 3 Swimming Championships, in Bloemfontein, for her 1st place finish in 50m Breaststroke and a 3rd in the 100m Breaststroke. The 26th annual JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience, hosted by UKZN’s Centre for Creative Arts, has announced that it will honour veteran South African dance-maker Robyn Orlin as the 2024 JOMBA! Legacy Artist.

Orlin’s work we wear our wheels with pride and slap your streets with colour… we said ‘bonjour’ to satan in 1820 … will feature at JOMBA! which takes place at The Sneddon Theatre in Durban from 27 August to 8 September, with a satellite festival at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg from 11 to 14 September 2024.

Originally created in 2021 we wear our wheels … is a collaboration with Johannesburg based Moving into Dance. This is a work that negotiates the complicated Durban rickshaw histories – and it finally comes to Durban.

Born in 1955 Johannesburg, Orlin’s vision of contemporary dance continues to be a kind of aesthetic eclecticism where she draws heavily on her own histories of ballet and modern, and a fascination with film and cinema. She has shifted the boundaries of what we consider dance to be, often falling into witty and biting political satire. Her love of kitsch, tutus and yellow plastic ducks has seen her creating iconic images that still haunt a South African dance landscape.

Orlin was trained at the London School of Contemporary Dance (1975-1980), then at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1990-1995). She began her career as a dancer, choreographer and teacher in South Africa, where she was quickly spotted, as much for the singularity of her dance making, as for the chaos that reigns in her creations. Her (multiple prize-winning) dance piece Daddy, I have seen this piece six times before and I still don’t know why they’re hurting each other, which mocks the difficulties and shortcomings of the young rainbow nation, but also classical ballet as a trajectory of discrimination, enabled her to tour in Europe and brought her international recognition. France has since become a creative territory for her and she has made her first film, Hidden Beauties, Dirty Stories (Ina/Arte, 2004), her first opera, Handel’s L’Allegro, il penseroso ed il moderato (Opéra Garnier, Paris, 2007), and her first theatre production, Les Bonnes, by Jean Genet (Théâtre de la Bastille, Paris, 2019) in France. She continues to create work in South Africa.

Artistic Director and curator, Lliane Loots says, “The JOMBA! festival’s 2024 overall curatorial theme and provocation is “the memory of home” and we can think of no South African artist better suited to unpack both the simplicity and complexity of this in her work. Memories are about history, belonging, sometimes suffocating nostalgia, and maybe also about charting new futures … Robyn’s work is all of this and more”.

“Orlin’s work has not been performed in South Africa for many years, and so it is with great thanks for the support from IFAS (Paris) and IFAS (Johannesburg), that JOMBA! welcomes her back to South Africa as our 2024 JOMBA! Legacy artist.”

JOMBA! takes place at The Sneddon Theatre in Durban from 27 August to 8 September, and the satellite festival takes place at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg from 11 to 14 September 2024.

What a fantastic weekend at UWBC!

On Sunday we hosted our annual all-day competition which was generously sponsored by J Leslie Smith & Company and well supported with 18 teams from different clubs. The competition consisted of 3 sessions with some very interesting scores in each session. There were a couple of runaway games, and also some very close battles between teams, but everyone had an enjoyable day of bowls in the autumn sunshine.

Let's go Hiking in our Town.

The Howick Hiking Club and Friends of Symmonds Stream are joining forces once again to clear the Symmonds Stream Trail. Alfred Zuma and his team will be employed to do the clearing as he has been involved in clearing this path every year for the past 10 years. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Howick Doctors (Drs Cook, Peiser and partners) for their very generous donation of R500 per month to keep this trail clear. It is a mammoth task as the alien invasive plants are relentless in their efforts to smother the area.

The trail starts at Maggie’s Coffee Shop in Mare Street and follows the stream up to Buchanan Street and then on up the fence line to pop out in Drew Avenue. For those fitter and more adventurous people there is the opportunity to continue along Drew Avenue towards the Currys Post road and up onto Beacon Hill for a beautiful view over Howick.

We would like to invite people to take a walk along the trail to enjoy nature in our town. It is a wonderful trail to take your dogs for a walk but please keep them on leads at all times as there are bushbuck and duiker living in the bushes.

The Howick Hiking Club will be conducting a hike for their members on Sunday 5th May.
